Effutu Youth Rally Behind James Kofi Annan, Demand Jobs Over Handouts

The youth of Effutu Constituency gathered on October 15, 2024, to express their deep concern about the pressing issue of unemployment in their area. Led by the Simpa Youth, this group of young individuals made it clear that their plea for job opportunities is not aligned with any political party, but rather a desperate call to address the crippling effects of unemployment.

Globally, 65 million youth are unemployed, with a staggering 13.1% youth employment rate, almost three times that of adults. In Ghana, despite the Children’s Act setting the minimum age for employment at 15 years, many young people lack access to education, training, and job opportunities. This has led to a significant impact on human security, education, and overall well-being in Effutu.

The youth criticized Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markins, who has served three terms, for failing to create even a single business or company. Instead, they expressed confidence in James Kofi Annan, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, citing his business acumen as a valuable asset in creating job opportunities..

“We need jobs, not handouts,” the youth emphasized. “We want someone who will teach us how to fish, not someone who will give us fish today and we can’t get it again.” This sentiment echoes Annan’s promise to build the Winneba Central market, which would provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.

The youth also addressed the misconception that they are unwilling to work, pointing out that many Effutu youth are forced to sleep outside at night or change homes due to hardship. They called for a collaborative effort to address youth unemployment, urging Mr Annan to work with them, the media, and stakeholders to create opportunities.

As the parliamentary candidate, James Kofi Annan has pledged to prioritize job creation, highlighting the need for a 24-hour economy to drive growth and development. With the youth of Effutu rallying behind him, it remains to be seen how his vision for the constituency will unfold.
