Emergency contraceptives should be taken once a year – Midwife

A Midwife and Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the National Association of Registered Midwives , Rossetta Ntiriwa Boakye says women have to take emergency pills once every year.

She says it’s dangerous and can cause havoc to their uterine line if taking the medication becomes frequent.

“Research has proven that every woman is supposed to take the emergency contraceptive pills once a year. However, in recent times, some people take it like blood tonic and that is bad. You’ll destroy the uterine line and cause problems for yourself,” she said on Accra-based OKAY FM.

She, however, cleared the misconception that family planning cause fibroids.

“I want to clear the misconception that family planning can cause fibroid. What family planning does especially with the hormonal ones is that it sits on the egg and prevents it from breaking. So there will be absence of menstruation. There are other ones because the egg did not mature well so it breaks and the blood is small.

Some contraceptives change the uterine lining so instead of shedding off as menstruation, you don’t see the flow as it used to be and that’s the work of the medicine. So if the menses is not coming or the flow is not much it does not mean that the blood is stuck somewhere and will develop into fibroid. People should understand that family planning does not make any women prone to fibroid,” she said.
