Yaa Pono joins ongoing ‘beef’, jabs Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale’s statement that rap music in Ghana cannot stand the test of time has awakened the monster in Yaa Pono as the rapper has described the dancehall artiste’s comment as “rubbish”.

While expressing disappointment in rapper Sarkodie for releasing a track that takes a swipe at some artistes at a time the country is striving to conquer the deadly coronavirus disease, Shatta Walewithout equivocation mentioned that hiplife grandpapa Reggie Rockstone made no impact with rap, adding that the genre has no future in Ghana.

“The elderly detests rap; they rather like highlife,” he said in an interview with TV3’s MzGee. “Rap is not even going to stand strong. People like Sarkodie do this at this time, I blame Reggie Rockstone for bringing rap to Ghana. If Sarkodie has thrown a shot at me at this time that people are dying, what is he trying to do, can’t he wait.”

Yaa Pono, one of the rappers the country boasts of in reaction indicated that Shatta Wale was only spewing gibberish.

Sharing snippets of Shatta Wale’s interview, Yaa Pono said: “Rubbish talk … drago.”

Before the response, the Uptown Energy boss had sent out a word of caution he would deal ruthlessly with whoever jabs him in a song.

He said: “2020 any song wey go throw shots at Uptown energy, we shall resist quick. The UPNESS is dropn on 14 APRIL 2020…ready 4 my album….UPNESS.”

It is unclear whether there will be a repeat of the 2017 incident where both artistes engaged in a lyrical war.

Recall Yaa Pono was reportedly denied an opportunity to perform at a concert headlined by Shatta Wale in Cape Coast in the Central Region. The organisers of the said concert later explained that Yaa Pono was unable to perform because time was not on their side; they had to cut down on the performances.

Yaa Pono however said he was not allowed to perform because his performance would have overshadowed Shatta Wale’s. A response from Shatta Wale’s camp seemed to have infuriated Yaa Pono as he took to social media and dared anyone to disrespect him or say “fi”.

A fearless Shata Wale took up the challenge and released a song titled ‘Say Fi’. He taunted the rapper asking why a man would name himself ‘Yaa’ – a name for females born on Thursday.

Yaa Pono in response, unleashed venom on “Gbe Naabu’, a song that made fun of the size of Shatta Wale’s mouth, his works and his lifestyle.
