Falling ‘chop-box’ causes ghastly accident, 8 dead

Information reaching the DAILY GUIDE indicates that on March 18, 2021 a road accident occurred near Sawla, the District Capital of the Tuna-Sawla-Kalba Constituency of the Bole–Bamboi Municipality in the Savannah Region.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the accident claimed eight lives; 6 of whom died on the spot, to be followed by two others later, who died while on admission in hospital.

It has been claimed that a falling ‘chop-box’ caused the accident.

The dead included a 28-year-old Bashiru Mahama, driver’s mate of the accident-vehicle, a Sprinter Benz bus bearing registration number AS 3022-15.

Bodies of the deceased passengers have since been conveyed and deposited at the Wa Regional Hospital mortuary; while the injured passengers, including the Benz bus driver, were receiving treatment at the Sawla District Hospital.

A Sawla Police report stated that on March 18, 2021, one Mahama Sakara, driver of a Sprinter Benz bus, bearing registration number AS 3022-15, reported to the Sawla Police that he was travelling from Wa heading towards Kumasi. He alleged that at the outskirts of Sawla, a Ssanyoung Mimi bus overtook his vehicle. In the process of the overtaking, a ‘chop-box’ dropped from the Ssanyoung, landing in his lane.

Mr. Sakara said he could not avoid running on the ‘chop-box’with his front tyre, which exploded, causing him to lose control of the steering of his vehicle. His Sprinter Benz bus veered off the road and crashed headlong into a nearby bush.

The Sawla Police have since confirmed that they have commenced investigations to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.
