Family perishes in gory accident

Three persons from the same family were killed last Sunday when the motorcycle on which they were riding was knocked down by an articulated truck at Apemanim, near Agona-Nkwanta in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.

The three – a husband, a pregnant wife and a son – were all members of World Tabernacle Church, popularly called Spoken Word, who met their untimely deaths when they were returning from church service at about 11:30 a.m.

The three were identified as Michael Yankey, 31, the husband, who was riding the motorbike, Beckina Yankey, the pregnant wife and their one-year-old son, Temperance Yankey.

According to Chief Supt. Richard Appiah, the Western Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), at about 11:45 a.m. on that fateful Sunday morning, one Fredrick Adams, 37, was driving a DAF articulated truck from Bibiani to Takoradi.

On reaching a spot near the Advance Furniture Works on the Agona Nkwanta–Apemanim road, the articulated driver allegedly knocked down the motorcycle which was being ridden by the husband with the wife and the child on it.

Michael Yankey died on the spot while his pregnant wife and the child were pronounced dead when they were rushed to the Dixcove Government Hospital.

The lifeless bodies of the deceased persons had been deposited at the morgue of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi for preservation and autopsy.

The articulated truck and the motorcycle had been impounded at the Agona-Nkwanta Police Station, while the driver, Fredrick Adams had been placed in police custody pending investigations.
