Family threatens suit after man dies while in police custody

Family of an electrician allegedly manhandled during a police arrest and subsequently dying in police custody at the Abrafo Kokoben Police Station in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region has threatened court action.

Uncle of the deceased Samuel Nyamekye explains their son didn’t die of natural cause because he was fit and strong until the police manhandled and arrested him.

“Therefore, we will ensure we follow the issue to unravel the actual cause of death,” he said on Akoma FM’s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma on Monday August 8.

Identified as Prince Salasi, the 37-year-old electrician died Thursday, August 4 in police custody at Abrafo Kokoben after allegedly manhandled him during arrest.

Reports by eyewitnesses explain the deceased was beaten to pulp by two police officers when he resisted arrest.

Speaking to GhanAkoma host Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin, the uncle of late Prince Salasi said they will not rest “until we get to the root cause of our son’s death”.

“The police are saying he died of natural cause but we don’t believe them. We are calmly waiting for the autopsy to unfold and we will take them on because this issue is becoming one too many,” he lamented.

A news release published by the Ghana Police Service, however, stated that the deceased suspect fell ill whiles in police custody and was rushed to the hospital but died on arrival.

The police also added that two of its officers have been interdicted for in-depth investigations to ascertain circumstances that led to the death of suspect in custody.
