Former Minister of Mines & Energy dies at 83

The former Minister of Mines & Energy under President Jerry John Rawlings’s government, Mr Fred Ohene-Kena, has passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019, at the age of 83.

He died in Accra after a prolonged illness with his family at his side, confirmed a close relative.

Mr Ohene-Kena served as Minister for Mines & Energy from 1997 until 1999 when he was sacked by President Rawlings while he was in London in connection with a bid to sell the government’s shares in the Ashanti Goldfields Co Ltd. His sack was as a result of a conditional bid for then-troubled Ashanti Goldfields from Lonmin Plc.

He later served in government including positions on the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) and the Judicial Council of Ghana under the Atta Mills administration. He also served as the Chairman of the Minerals Commission of Ghana and in 2010, he was appointed to the AngloGold Ashanti Board of Directors as a Non-Executive member.

The late Fred Ohene-Kena was survived by a wife and six children. The final funeral rites are yet to be announced.
