Galamsey back in full force after failed operation halt

Anti-galamsey activist Barima Nana Yaw Buobu has revealed that illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, is back in full force at various illegal mining sites notwithstanding Government’s renewed effort to curb the canker. According to him, excavators are back at some sites and are operating at full throttle devastating the environment in search of gold.

The administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo has fiercely fought against galamsey in the past several years with limited success. The new minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has recently mounted a spirited fight against it.

His Operation Halt saw the seizure and burning of excavators onsite leading to protests criticism from the miners and some Ghanaians. Notwithstanding the criticism and protests, the burning of the excavators and other equipment continued.

But for Mr Buobu, who has been voracious against the activities of the illegal miners, the effort by the minister has not rid the environment of the miners.
