Mother of ‘stripped and paraded’ teenagers showers praises on IGP

Mother of the two teenagers stripped naked and paraded on the streets of Akuapem-Adawso in the Eastern Region, Augustina Dansoa says she is still in a state of disbelief the unprecedented professional intervention of the police in her wards’ case.

“I was there when the IGP himself called me and told me to prepare them to Accra. I told him I don’t have money for their medical bills. The IGP said he was sending a team to pick us and truly they came and picked us to Police Hospital in Accra. We spent two weeks there. They took very good care of the children. I couldn’t believe a poor person like me could be respected in such manner. The IGP told me he will help the children return to school so after we were discharged my son said he will go to school so he is currently schooling at Nsawam but the other boy said he will learn artisanal skills,” She told Eastern Regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah Monday November 22,2021.

She added ” I thank Starr FM and GHone TV for exposing this inhumane treatment meted out to these children. As poor as I am, I never thought I will get justice . Now people in this area are insulting me for taking the matter to the media but I’m not bothered. Family of the suspects are also begging me to withdraw the case to the house for amicable settlement but I told them the case is in the hands of the police I can’t do anything about it”.

They were enrolled after undergoing two-week intensive medical treatment at the Police hospital in Accra at the behest of the IGP.

Augustina Dansoa said even though her son is recovering from the trauma he suffered courtesy psychological therapy offered by the police, he has vowed not to return to the community until he realizes his dream of becoming a military officer.

Background

The victims, both 14 years of age, were alleged to have stolen Ghc100 cash and a mobile phone.

The mob led by one Larbi and Akwei brutalized the two children making one of them defecate on himself in the process.

The minors were then stripped naked and paraded from the Tinkong stretch of the Koforidua -Mamfe highway to the Adawso township where traders were having brisk business on the market day.

A video intercepted by Kasapa News Eastern Regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah who visited the community to investigate the incident shows the hands of the two minors tied while being paraded and assaulted with their naked bodies.

The mother of one of the victims, Augustina Danso, could not hide her tears recounting the inhumane treatment meted to her son.

She said even though the case has been reported to the Adawso police it has been transferred to the Akropong District Police Command but the suspects are still walking freely. She said those who assaulted her son are rather bragging that “poor person cannot win a case against rich man”.

She wants justice to be served.

“Help me, I don’t have anyone to help. The child is my sister’s child. She is deaf and dumb. She can’t speak. We don’t have money to litigate to seek justice. I beg you, help. They paraded them nakedly on the streets. They said they have stolen just Ghc100 which was taken away from them,” Augustina Danso appealed while weeping.

Joseph Amegah who is an eyewitness is disgusted about how the dignity of the Children was trampled on by the mob.

“Even if someone steals something of yours, you need not take the laws into your own hands. Definitely, you have to report the person. How they stripped them naked, dragged them through the principal streets through the market, and it was a market day. Drivers, traders, those who are selling those who are buying. So they have disgraced the children”.
