Nam 1’s bail conditions reviewed

An Accra Circuit Court has ruled that persons who have pledged to take responsibility if Menzgold Chief Executive Officer, Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as Nam 1, fails to show up in court to stand trial must no longer show evidence of owning property worth 1 billion cedis.

This followed an application by his lawyers that described the bail sum as impossible to meet. Lead Counsel Kwame Akuffo urged the Court to fix the sum at 5 million cedis.

The court, presided over by Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye, on July 26 granted him bail in the sum of GH¢1 billion, with five sureties.

Three of the sureties were required to collectively show evidence of owning property worth that amount.

Mr Mensah, however, remains in custody as he has not been able to meet the conditions leaving his lawyers to ask the judge for a downward review to 5 million cedis.

ASP Sylvester Asare, who is leading the State’s Prosecution, did not oppose the application except to ask the court to decide the sum and not allow Defence lawyers to decide. The court ruled that the sureties are no longer to be justified.

The case has been adjourned to September 3, 2019.
