UG freshers stranded after failing to secure accommodation ahead of reopening

After failing to find accommodation before reopening, hundreds of first-year students from the University of Ghana and their parents are stranded on the school’s campus.

As the university student population outnumbers the available rooms and beds, the University of Ghana has been struggling for some time to accommodate its students on campus.

Stranded parents and their wards, however, accuse the management of the university of hoarding the rooms, exacerbating the school’s age-old accommodation crisis.

We got here as early as 5:00 a.m., and we had no knowledge that the portal was available for accommodation. They opened the website at 12 am for us to come here to make inquiries just to be told, which means they are stopping other people from having access to accommodation, a parent told JoyNews.

The disappointed parents say that unless the platform, which the workers claim to have problems, is corrected for them to secure accommodation for their children, they will not leave the premises.

We are waiting for the hall master to see us. “We have learned that he has gone to a meeting, but whatever the case, we have to see him, so we’re going to wait for him,” said a parent.

In the meantime, the students who were able to obtain accommodation via the online platform protested that even though they had paid the necessary fees, they had lost their beds.
