GFA bans Asante Kotoko from Baba Yara Stadium after fan violence

The Ghana Football Association has “temporarily” banned Asante Kotoko from playing its home games at the Baba Yara Stadium.

This follows disturbances caused by supporters of the Kumasi-based club on Sunday to protest refereeing decisions in their 0-1 loss to Berekum Chelsea.

The decision stands, “pending the adjudication of the matter by the GFA Disciplinary Committee.”

“Article 14 (2) of the GFA Premier League Regulations states that: ‘the GFA may order the closure of any league centre/venue where the safety of clubs, match officials and/or spectators cannot be guaranteed’,” an FA statement said.

“The GFA Prosecutor shall prefer charges against any person/party found to have breached any provision of the GFA Regulations or Disciplinary Code,” it added.

Sunday’s disturbances

Fans of the Porcupine Warriors threw water bottles and sachets onto the field in protest of a red card to defender, Empem Dacosta.

The referee’s decision did not go down well with the home fans who believed the incident – leading to the defender being sent off – was between Kwame Adom, a different Kotoko player and an opposition player.

After the game, the referee was escorted out amid heavy security.

More disturbances forced local police to fire warning shots to disperse the raging crowd. A Kotoko supporter who was hit by one of the bullets is receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
