Ghana Education system defective – Catholic Priest

A Kumasi based Catholic Priest, Rev. Father Mary James Opoku Ware, has described the current educational system in Ghana as defective.

According to the renowned Radio preacher, the new curriculum introduced by the Ghana Education Service (GES) will gradually take away the mutual respect between a teacher and a student.

Rev. Father Mary James Opoku Ware, the host of Otec FM’s religious programme, ‘Awurade Nan Ase’, literally meaning, ‘At the Feet of the Lord’, said this in his sermon on Monday, February 3, 2020.

He said the new teaching skills and techniques by the GES, which involves dancing, singing and joking in front of students, all in the name of grabbing the attention of the students is appalling and needs to be revised.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment ((NaCCA) in a bid to provide a firm foundation for future academic endeavor has produced a new curriculum for basic schools in the country.

The revised curriculum according to NaCCA seeks to build character and nurture children to become citizens the country can be proud teachers are mandated to practically demonstrate their works to students through singing, videos and other means applicable in class rooms.

Rev. Father Mary James Opoku Ware of St Agnes – Catherine Catholic Church at Oforikrom in the Oforikrom municipal of the Ashanti region, explained that the move will make teachers comedians, thereby reducing respect for teachers on the part of students.

He therefore called on all stakeholders to maintain the religious and cultural aspects in the educational system to instill discipline in the children.
