Good Samaritan pays appeal fee for 15-year-old juvenile serving two-year jail sentence

The Deputy Managing Director of the State Housing Company, Roni Nicol, has funded the appeal fee of a 15-year old juvenile, who was handed a two-year jail term for court proceedings to begin next week.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that in a bid to secure bail for the 15-year-old boy, who has been serving a two-year jail sentence in adult prison, Crime Check TV raised concerns about the age of the teen.

The suspect, Adom, was convicted for two years for stealing, but the minor had denied any involvement and had said his nephew rather did it.

He says that he will be 15 years old in 3 months. And had disclosed that the policeman who handled his case altered his age and wrote 18 as his age.

According to the Juvenile Justice Act, Domestic law in Ghana, minors should not be kept in adult prisons, rather, the law makes provision for such children to be sent to a Senior Correctional Centre. Adom was however put into adult prison custody.

Crime Check TV on Friday, 9 August 2019, provided an update via its Facebook platform, stating that a Good Samaritan had paid for Adom’s Appeal fee for court proceedings to begin next week.

“…Many thanks to Roni Nicol, Deputy MD, State Housing Company for paying for Adom’s Appeal which begins next week. I have now come to understand why many claim that Ghana is a country that is not worth dying for,’’ the Facebook post said.
