Gov’t Blows GHS125 Million on tree planting excercise, Ghanaians React

President Akufo-Addo has led efforts across the nation to mark the maiden Green Ghana Day yesterday, with the planting of trees. This is a presidential initiative under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The initiative is aimed at planting over 5 million trees in efforts to preserve and protect the country’s forest cover and the environment at large.

Millions of seedlings made up of different tree species were distributed to the 16 regions of the country as part of preparations for The Green Ghana.

The seedlings were distributed to individual Ghanaians and organizations for the purposes of planting.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, has described the initiative as a big investment into the country’s forestry sector.

In an address, ahead of a tree planting exercise yesterday, the President noted that illegal mining has left detrimental effects on the environment. As such, all and sundry must support to regain the enormous forest cover that the nation had some decades ago.

Highlighting the importance of trees, the President stressed that the survival of human beings is based on the existence of trees.

However, despite its importance and long-term relevance to the country, some Ghanaians have reacted to the amount budgeted for the project.

A letter sighted by MyNewsGhana.net and signed by the projects funding committee revealed a whooping GHS125 million as the proposed budget for the tree planting exercise.

According to some social media commentators, the government could have done this important project with a much lesser budget.

However, many stakeholders, organizations, traditional leaders, and individuals have rallied support for such an important exercise with many commending the president Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo for rolling out this initiative.

According to the president, The Green Ghana day will be a continual culture to ensure the rapid replacement of trees lost to illegal mining and illegal logging activities.
