The Ghana Revenue Authority has locked up the offices of Intelligent Metering and Energy Solutions for non-payment of taxes of about GH¢6 million.

The private firm undertakes electrical and energy services, and work closely with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The GRA Taskforce during its routine checks as part of efforts to increase tax compliance locked up the company’s offices in East Legon, Accra. The exercise also nearly saw the closure of Miklin Hotel located in East Legon which also owed GH¢2.8 million.

The management of the hotel decided to make a payment of GH¢1 million after negotiations with the GRA team.

The Head of Debt Management for Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Michael Sefa said “Distress action is the last resort. We have sent them letters upon letters and made negotiations but we realised they won’t pay, so we came to lock up the place.”

So far, debts owed the Ghana Revenue Authority amounts to about GH¢2.7 billion of which over GH¢3 million have been retrieved from debtors so far.

The tax enforcement unit of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Wednesday embarked on the distress action to clamp down on companies defaulted in the payment of taxes.
