Hate-Motivated Violence: Michael Lawer, a teacher and an LGBTQ+ Individual Attacked in Western Region of Ghana.


On 19th October 2023, a brutal attack targeting members of the LGBTQ+ community took place in the Western Region of Ghana . Four members, including Michael Larwer, a teacher and a known member of the LGBTQ+ community, were returning home after attending a meeting when they were ambushed and beaten by a group of assailants. One person was beaten to death.

The attack, which occurred in the Western Region of Ghana, is believed to have been motivated by public outrage. It is alleged that the assailants, who were aware of the group’s identities, had been monitoring their movements prior to the attack. The attack was fueled by hatred and prejudice.

Fortunately, despite sustaining injuries, Lawer managed to escape the attackers.

The attack on the LGBTQ+ guys has sparked widespread condemnation and concern within the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana and beyond. It serves as a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana, where violence remains prevalent.

Human rights organizations and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have spoken out strongly against the attack, calling for increased protection for the LGBTQ+ community and condemning the culture of intolerance that permits such violence.
