Hon. Catherine Abelema Afeku to contest for National Women’s Organizer position in Npp

Former Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hon. Catherine Abelema Afeku, will be vying for the position of National Women Organizer of the New Patriotic Party when the party officially opens nominations for its upcoming internal primaries.

Hon. Catherine Abelema Afeku, a seasoned politician, accomplished communicator, and advocate for women’s empowerment, brings decades of experience in governance, diplomacy, and party work to the table. Her profile stands out for its unique blend of international exposure, grassroots connection, and transformational leadership in both public service and civil society.

She began her academic journey at Nsein Secondary School in Axim. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Kenya, received Hotel Management training in Switzerland, and obtained a Master’s degree in the U.S.A. She is currently pursuing an LLB at MountCrest University College (2022 to date).

She served as a Cabinet Minister under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, where she led key initiatives such as the “Year of Return” and “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana” campaigns—landmark projects that elevated Ghana’s image on the global stage and promoted domestic tourism.

In her previous roles as Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro Gwira, Chairperson of key parliamentary committees, and communications strategist, Hon. Afeku championed developmental policies and fought for greater representation of women in politics and leadership. She is also a former member of the ECOWAS Parliament and has worked with international organizations, including the World Bank and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), where she chaired the Leadership Taskforce.

According to her team, Hon. Afeku has mentored over 800 young women and supported more than 1,000 women in skill development programs across Ghana. She has also demonstrated strong multilingual capacity—speaking English, French, Italian, Swahili, and several Ghanaian local languages—an asset that positions her to unify and mobilize NPP women from all regions and backgrounds.

If elected, Hon. Afeku would be the first former Cabinet Minister to occupy the role of National Women Organizer in the party’s history. Her entry into the race is already generating excitement within the rank and file of the party, especially among female delegates seeking dynamic and strategic leadership.
