House of Chiefs to state agencies: Ensure proper resettlement of victims of Akosombo dam spillage

The National House of Chiefs,  has emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach to the resettlement of those impacted by the Akosombo dam spillage.

Over 2, 6000 households have been affected following flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo dam.

Speaking at a meeting in Kumasi vice-president of the National House of Chiefs and paramount chief of the Lawra Traditional Council, Naa Puowelle Karbo III, called for a resettlement process characterised by empathy and a deep commitment to the welfare of the affected communities.

“Several citizens of Ghana are being displaced by the release of water from the Akosombo dam and the torrential rains that occurred. We want to say, on behalf of Nananom, the National House of Chiefs, that we commiserate with our many citizens who have been affected. We urge all agencies responsible for ensuring proper resettlement and bringing relief to these citizens and take action to ease their suffering.”

“We, therefore, commiserate with all our citizens affected in the Volta Region, Greater Accra, the Oti Region, and other parts of the country. We pray all the agencies will take the necessary actions and bring relief,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Dr Bryan Acheampong has assured all farmers in the nine districts who have been affected by the recent spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams that the government will ensure their full restoration following the devastating impact of the spillage on their farmlands.

Dr Bryan Acheampong gave the assurance when he addressed attendees of the presidential conference on the “Youth in Agriculture” initiative held at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana (UoG), on Wednesday, 18 October 2023.

“We have all witnessed the devastation as a result of the necessary action the VRA had to take to save the Akosombo dam. As a result, several farmers have been affected, and a lot of them have been completely wiped out.

“I have directed that due to this emergency, 40 million dollars of the World Bank-funded food systems resilience programme be restructured to restore farmers fully whose farms have been wiped out due to the necessary action taken by the VRA to save us all” the Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong stated.
