How North Africa dominated August 2021 FIFA World Ranking

North Africa has dominated the August 2021 ranking of the FIFA / Coca Cola ranking of senior national teams producing four out of the top five ranked teams.

Senegal’s Teranga Lions continue to boss the continent with Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco following in that order.

Nigeria breaks the North African flow coming in at fifth before record AFCON winners, the Pharoahs of Egypt, come in at sixth.

The seventh to tenth slots are occupied by Ghana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Mali respectively.

Senegal climed three steps on the global ranking moving from 24th to 21st slot. Tunisia despite losing 2 points managed a 28th slot at the global level.

Sierra Leone and Eswatini did not take part in regional tournaments, yet they gained ground thanks to their positive friendly results. While the Leone Stars gained eight points to climb to 106th globally, Dominic Kunene’s King’s Shield accrued the same number of points to sit in 146th place.

For Africa Cup of Nations debutants Comoros, losing 4-0 to Mohamed Salah’s Egypt on the last day of their Afcon qualifiers, are rated no. 38 in Africa and 133rd worldwide.

Globally, Belgium retained top spot despite bowing out of the European Championship quarter-finals. Eventual winners Italy moved up into the top five behind runners-up England.
