IGP visits Yeji, Busunya after youth attacked police stations

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, on Tuesday, 3 December 2019, visited the Yeji and Busunya communities in the Bono East Region.

It follows an attack on the Yeji and Busunya police stations by some members of the community in October this year.

During the visit, the IGP met with the chiefs and people of the Yeji traditional area as well as the residents of Busunya in the Nkoranza North District.

He expressed discontent at the damage caused to the Busunya police station and two police vehicles at Yeji.

Mr Oppong-Boanuh said the Ghana Police Service will not tolerate attacks on its personnel and property.

He emphasised that attacks on the police service, its personnel and property could compromise the security of both communities and called on the chiefs to advise the youth against such violence.

The chiefs of both communities expressed regret at the incident and noted that the traditional authorities are not in support of such acts of lawlessness.

They expressed their preparedness to assist the police to ensure that the perpetrators face the full rigours of the law.

On behalf of the people, the chief of the Yeji traditional area, Pimampim Yaw Kagbrese V, commended the IGP for the visit and called on him to help combat robbery in the area.

The IGP also announced the upgrading of the Yeji district police station to a divisional status, which, he said, meant that more officers would be posted there to help fight crime.

The IGP also visited the Yeji Catholic Hospital, which was attacked by some youth of the community and assured the administration of protection from the police.

He later met the personnel of the Yeji and Busunya police stations and commended the officers for their professionalism, discipline and commitment to duty.

The IGP also announced that the police administration has resolved to accelerate the promotion of officers serving in deprived communities a year ahead of their colleagues in other areas.
