Akwasi Opong-Fosu, a renowned governance and public policy analyst and former Minister of Local Government, has made a compelling assurance to Ghanaians that the country will regain its stature as a beacon of democratic governance under President Mahama’s leadership.
In a recent interview with TV Africa’s Lebene on Breakfast Live, Hon. Opong-Fosu emphasized that the current government’s erosion of foundational blocks and compromise of independent institutions has severely undermined democratic governance.
He lamented that the lack of accountability has led to unprecedented abuse of power and corruption with impunity. However, he expressed optimism that the next NDC government, under President Mahama’s helm, will prioritize probity and accountability in the public service. President Mahama has pledged to strengthen anti-corruption institutions, including the Auditor-General’s Department, EOCO, Special Prosecutor’s Office, and CHRAJ.
He indicated that, Mr Mahama plans to establish a Governance Advisory Council to reclaim democratic values and principles that have been eroded, thereby restoring citizens’ trust and confidence in the government.
Regarding unemployment, a pressing national challenge, Hon. Opong-Fosu explained that the 24-hour economy policy will boost productivity in key sectors such as agricultural mechanization, industrialization, and technology. This policy hinges on demand and supply, local markets, and export. He revealed that creating a high demand for products, firms will require more labor, thereby reducing unemployment and creating jobs.
The 24-hour economy policy also involves adding value to raw materials before export, making it a wealth creation policy. To drive this agenda, incentives and subsidies will be offered to businesses operating 24 hours, and the private sector will receive government support. Additionally, some taxes will be waived to support these enterprises and firms.
This comprehensive approach aims to revitalize Ghana’s economy, ensure democratic governance, and improve the lives of citizens.Mr Mahama at the helm, Ghanaians can look forward to a new Ghana.
