Justice for Democracy Hub Protesters: John Mahama Condemns High-Handed Remand by Police

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly condemned the two-week remand of 39 Democracy Hub protesters, describing it as “high-handed” and an abuse of their rights..

The protesters were arrested during a three-day demonstration against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, where they clashed with police at the 37 Roundabout in Accra.

Mahama emphasized the importance of balancing law and order with protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms. He argued that the youth have the right to engage in peaceful protests, especially on critical issues like environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

The Democracy Hub protesters demonstrated against galamsey, calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take swift action to halt illegal mining operations and protect the nation’s water bodies and forests. Over 50 protesters were arrested, with 39 remanded in police custody for two weeks, and 11 more remanded the following day.

Mahama criticized the remand decision, urging the authorities to request the judge to review and grant bail immediately.

Mahama’s stance on this issue highlights the tension between maintaining law and order and protecting citizens’ rights in Ghana.
