President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Ghana Premier League record winners, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, 23, must take the lead for Ghana football to flourish again.
He made this remark when the Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah, paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House, before their season opener today against Eleven Wonders.
President Akufo-Addo said the Porcupine Warriors hold a special place in the development of sports in Ghana and promised something will be done to assist the club in its participation in Africa.
“It is difficult for Ghana football to succeed unless Kotoko succeed. That’s how it has been in the past and that’s how it should be in the future,” He said as quoted by Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.
“Kotoko play a very special, cherished and enviable role in Ghanaian Sports development.
“Clearly, it’s possible the Government should be able to assist the club, this will be temporary measure over a period of time.
“Ultimately, the club should be self-sufficient, generating money to keeping the club going.
“We will put our heads together to see what we can do to assist, through the minister of sports.
“I think it’s in the interest of Ghana to have a strong participation [in the CAF Champions League] to fly the flag of Ghana.”
