Kufuor supports EC’s decision to compile new voters’ register

The former president John Agyekum Kufour, has expressed hit total support for the Ghana’s Electoral Commission decision to compile a new and credible voters’ register for the 2020 general elections.

“Everything possible must be done to ensure a very credible electoral process; the current register should be replaced to make it more capable of tackling the verification challenges that occur during elections’’ he said.

Speaking on OTEC FM’S breakfast show dubbed ‘Nyansapo’ in an exclusive interview on Tuesday December 24, 2019, Mr. John Agyekum Kufour was confident the new voters’ register will even make the elections more credible.

The EC has asked Parliament to approve GH¢444,846,663 for the compilation of a new voters’ register which it believes will be more credible and efficient than the existing one, adding that here is the need to replace outmoded biometric machines.

The NDC, however, maintains that the Electoral Commission’s move to compile a new biometric voters’ register is illogical.

But Former president Kufuor was of the view that in order to ensure that peace prevails before, during and after the 2020 elections, al the parties must agree to EC in ensuring that a new voters register is compiled.

”The EC is accountable to the people generally. The EC is not a power unto itself. Yes, the constitution provides for its independence, but that same constitution has at its cornerstone accountability and transparency”, he told the programme’s host Captain Koda.
