Mahama Criticizes Akufo-Addo Over Statue, Urges Focus on Development

Former President John Mahama, has taken a swipe at President Nana Akufo-Addo for prioritizing the construction of statues over national development.

Mr Mahama’s comments come after a statue was erected in the Western Region specifically Effia Nkwanta in honor of Akufo-Addo.

Mahama questioned the government’s priorities, stating that Ghanaians deserve better than a leadership focused on building statues rather than developing the country.

He suggested that Akufo-Addo should leave office before Ghanaians start to appreciate his performance, which might then justify the construction of a statue in his honor.

Mahama highlighted his own legacy, citing notable projects such as the University of Ghana Hospital, Kasoa interchange, and Terminal 3. He emphasized that these initiatives demonstrate his commitment to Ghana’s development, unlike the current administration’s focus on building statues.

Mahama criticized Akufo-Addo for reneging on his promise to build a National Cathedral, only to construct a statue in his own honor. This, Mahama argued, is a clear indication of the government’s misplaced priorities.

Interestingly, the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council has claimed ownership of the statue in Takoradi, revealing that it cost them GH₵30,000 to erect. This development raises questions about the proliferation of such statues and the motivations behind them.
