*Mahama Slams NPP Government Over Economic Hardship, Cites Rising Kenkey Prices*
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its handling of the economy, citing the rising cost of living as a clear indicator of their economic mismanagement.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Juaboso, community durbar in Benchemaa on November 14, Mahama emphasized that Ghanaians deserve better.
Mahama pointed to the surge in food prices, specifically highlighting the price of kenkey, a staple Ghanaian food. “The prices of kenkey have skyrocketed, and people are unable to afford a ball of kenkey. People have to buy more than one to be satisfied,” he noted. Comparing the prices during his administration to the current rates, Mahama stated, “When NDC was in power, a ball of Kenkey was sold at GHS1, now it’s GHS5. Someone mentioned that they have started selling GHS10 Kenkey.”
He criticized the NPP government for failing to fulfill their promises and mismanaging the country’s finances, resulting in severe hardships and debt. “They told us we were sitting on money,” Mahama said, urging voters to consider the impact of these challenges when heading to the polls.
Mahama’s concerns about the economy are rooted in the struggles faced by many Ghanaians. Research shows that unemployment, unavailability of jobs, poverty, high cost of living, and poor living conditions are pressing concerns for many citizens. The NDC flagbearer has proposed a 24-hour economy policy to revitalize the economy, create jobs, and improve living standards.
This policy aims to transform Ghana into a self-sufficient and export-led economy, with a three-shift work schedule in many sectors. Mahama plans to achieve this through government support, private sector involvement, and favorable tax policies.
