Sammy Gyamfi, Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, has hinted that the much-awaited announcement of the running-mate of John Dramani Mahama may happen in March.
The NDC Communications Officer said the flagbearer of the party is yet to conclude consultations with the top hierarchy but assured that a name will be put out there once that is done.
“The flagbearer is still consulting the elders of the party. When he is ready, he will name his running mate,” Sammy Gyamfi stated on Good Evening Ghana show on Tuesday.
When asked to name likely contenders for the running mate slot for the 2020 elections, the NDC Communications Officer dismissed the question saying that “Who his running mate is, will not put food on the table of Ghanaians at least.”
He insisted that he has no idea who the penned down, likely names are.
When pressed by Paul Adom Otchere on the issue of when the names will be released, Sammy Gyamfi said the party has a convention of disclosing such details in March and suggested that the practice will continue.
“I can tell you that by March. You know we have a convention of naming our running mates in March. President Mahama was named in March” he stated.
Members of the governing New Patriotic Party and section of the Ghanaian public have questioned the rationale behind the NDC’s delay in choosing a running mate.
The NDC flagbearer was kicked out of power in 2016, after losing the elections in a historic defeat to the governing NPP’s candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo.
John Mahama, in 2016, had served a term. Prior to his victory in 2012, he served as Vice President under Professor Mills, who died in June 2012 as President of the Republic. He was succeeded by John Mahama.
The 2020 battle will see a repeat of the 2016 contest between the candidates of the two leading political parties in Ghana, NDC and NPP.
