Major Damongo drinking water source poisoned with DDT

The Damongo Agriculture Dam, the major source of drinking water for residents of Damongo, the capital of the Savanna Region, has been poisoned with a chemical suspected to be Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT.

DDT is a colourless, tasteless, and almost odourless crystalline chemical compound, an organochlorine.
It was originally developed as an insecticide and became infamous for its environmental impacts.

Some fauna were found dead on the shores of the dam in the early hours of Thursday, 29 August 2019.
The perpetrators are believed to have poisoned the dam at night.

Meanwhile, a popular sub-chief in Damongo, Chaliwura Kantara, known as ‘Stubborn Cat’ has said the person who poisoned the dam had the intention to kill as many people as possible in Damongo because people in the town depend on the dam.

Chaliwura Kantara has, therefore, called on the Savanna Regional Minister, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for West Gonja and the Coordinating Council to make sure an investigation is launched into the matter to bring the culprits to book.
