Malawi presidential election case hearing begins

The Constitutional Court in Malawi has started hearing a case challenging the results the presidential election in May.

The election was narrowly won by incumbent President, Peter Mutharika, but the opposition, who are challenging the results, say the elections were fraught with irregularities and are demanding a rerun.

Tension is at an all-time high in the country which has seen demonstrations held in all major cities and towns.

On Tuesday, demonstrators and the police clashed. A female police officer was beaten, stripped naked and forcefully photographed. Her photos were then circulated on social media.

A police vehicle and a armoured van, used for crowd control, were also burnt.

Hundreds of protesters have since been arrested.
