Ten individuals have sustained injuries after locals clash with the police in the Mamprugu Moaduri district of the North East Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident, which occurred on Tuesday (26 December) was as a result of a stolen motorbike by a young man, the police were preventing from being lynched.
The locals had massed up to beat the suspect, who had ran for safety at a nearby house, but the police had to fire warning shots following a confrontation with the irate mob.
They pelted stones at the law enforcement officers, erupting into pandemonium at the market. Medical officials said 10 civilians received various degrees of injuries and are responding to treatment while six others were also transported to the Walewale Government Hospital.
The district chief executive for the area, Abu Adams confirmed the incident, saying the police were attacked in an attempt to rescue the thief.
“What I know is that there was a stolen [bike] and the youth mobilised to attack that person. In the process, somebody called the police to intervene, and by the time the police arrived, the youth too didn’t take it easy,” he said.
“Irrespective of the situation, they have to first protect. So, in an attempt to protect, the youth turn to attack the police. I am yet to pick the correct details of the matter. So, the police were also attacked at that place so they had to find a way out and they started giving warning shots and I believe some of these warning shots hit some people,” Adams told Asaase News.
The assembly member Adam Abdulai also corroborated the incident.
The suspect is currently in police custody. Calm has since returned to the Loagri community, according to the police.
