Man allegedly killed his grandmother for ‘bewitching’ him

A 19-year-old man is in custody for allegedly strangling his grandmother to death after he accused her of practising witchcraft.

The suspect allegedly killed his 74-year-old grandmother inside their house in Hlanganani outside Giyani on Friday night.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the woman was killed at about 22:00.

“The victim’s body was discovered by her granddaughter in their home. Police were immediately called to the scene and on arrival they started with the initial investigations. A manhunt ensued for the suspect until he was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, in the nearby area.

“Preliminary investigations have indicated that the deceased might have been strangled. The suspect allegedly accused the deceased of bewitching him,” said Mojapelo.
