Mane refused Liverpool’s AFCON victory ‘party’ in solidarity with Salah

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane reportedly told the Merseyside club not to hold a special ceremony to celebrate his African Cup of Nations, AFCON, win.

According to the UK Mirror, Mane put in a special request to Liverpool not to make any reference of him and Senegal lifting the AFCON after he returned.

His decision was out of respect to teammate Mohamed Salah who was a losing finalist with Egypt. Mane believed any such celebration would have been hurting for his fellow teammate.

Senegalese players returning to their European sides were severally celebrated by their clubs upon their return from the AFCON.

Some clubs delivered cakes, others gave customized jerseys signed by the entire squad whiles in the case of Paris St. Germain, the club gave its two Senegalese stars trophies and the chance to be celebrated in front of the fans.

Senegal’s Teranga Lions beat Egypt’s Pharaohs to secure their first AFCON trophy. The game ended goalless after 120 minutes before the West Africans run out 4 – 2 winners via spot kicks.
