Meet the Nigerian man who has fathered five sets of twins

Nigerian man, Ayopo Ogunleye has fathered five sets of twins which have gained him a lot of popularity in his town.

After losing a set of twins and a male child, the middle-aged man is now raising 7 children single-handedly as his wife left him due to complaints from her family about the number of children she bore.

According to him, the birth of his first set of twins came as a shock as well as a dream come true.

The Yoruba community of Nigeria has the highest rates of twin births in the world. They are commonly referred to as “Ibeji”. The twins are then followed by a single birth known as “Idowu”.

“When I heard that my wife had given birth, I asked if it was a boy or girl, and they said I had twins.”

“I had been praying about it from childhood, I gave thanks to God. I hugged my wife and congratulated her,” he told BBC Yoruba.

He also explained that he does not eat anything special or do anything differently to others, his wife at the time kept delivering twins anytime she conceived and this remains a mystery to him.

Ayopo Ogunleye has not ruled out the idea of re-marrying and bearing more children even though he is financially constrained. He believes children are blessings from God.
