Mr. Saeed Adam Banda Opined on Ways to Improve Teacher Licensure Examination in Ghana

Mr. Saeed Adam Banda, the C.E.O and Publisher for SUCCESSLINK PUBLICATIONS, a seasoned educationist has contributed to the debate of the National Teacher Licensure Examination (NTLE) by giving some policy directives to improve the system.

The government of Ghana introduced the NTLE in 2018 backed by the Education Act of 2008, Act 778, with the first ever taken place in September 2018. Teachers are assessed on literacy, numeracy and core/essential skills. This is to improve the professional standards and status of teachers in the country.

However, he stated “In May this year, out of 7,728 prospective teachers who sat for the exam, only 1,277 (16.5%) passed with 6,481 (83.5%) failed. This is very worrying development”.

Mr. Saeed speaking with Appiah Kubi in an exclusive interview, indicated that the mass failure recorded in the recent NTLE as worrying trend and must be seriously worked on to ensure and enhance quality education in the country.

The educationist, Mr. Saeed made some policy proposals to improve the NTLE; first, he said there is the need to invite the relevant stakeholders to discuss modalities and operational framework for the exam; secondly, there should be a strong collaborations between the examination body and various academic institutions in the country. Thirdly , there should be set standards and subject specificity.

Also, he added, there should be capping on the number of times a prospective teacher can write, for instance, not more than 3 times for the resit.

Again, he opined that the Education Service must strengthen the basic levels of our education system with sound secondary education to the tertiary levels.

In conclusion, Mr. Saeed added that there is the need to find a lasting solution to the issue of degrading quality education to abate its challenges.
