The murdered pastor of the Tema Community 4 Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Dr. David Nyimanyi Nabegmado has been laid to rest.
The late pastor was buried amidst wailing and sorrow by hundreds of friends and family members who gathered to bid him farewell at the funeral ceremony held in Tema.
The body was laid in state for public viewing on Friday night and a funeral service subsequently held on Saturday at the church.
The late pastor, aged 64, was stabbed to death on December 30, 2018 in his office at the church premises while preparing to deliver a sermon that day.
His assailant, Francis Nabegmado, 31, who is his nephew reportedly attacked him with a knife and stabbed him in the right rib before slitting his throat.
The suspect was arrested by passersby when he attempted to escape after the dastardly act.
Wife of the deceased, Mrs Comfort Nabegmado in a tribute said the passing away of her husband has left a vacuum in her heart.
“You’ve turned the light to shine out of darkness. You have walked before me as the giant of my heart,” she wrote.
The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Professor Paul Yaw Frimpong-Manso said the death of Rev. Nabegmado is a great loss to the church, the body of Christ, and the nation in general.
Why did the suspect kill Rev. Nabegmado?
Francis Mugnanla Nabegmado after his arrest, said his uncle had tried to kill him several times in spiritual battles.
“My uncle is worshiping lesser gods. He is not a man of God. He has sacrificed all the family people and destroyed everybody,” he alleged.
In his bizarre and incoherent account of what led him to kill his uncle eventually, Francis said he “had to go and bring these gods to the house to protect the house” because of his uncle’s purported actions.
He continued the human sacrifice claims saying his uncle “sacrificed the church members; two or three in the year.”
Francis also said his uncle’s attempts to kill him involved seeking spiritual help from Benin and Burkina Faso.
“The gods [after the Burkina Faso trip] told him to find okro with a red cock and slice and put at the roads’ end. So when he came back, he sent my senior brother who is a pastor Peter Nabegmado and Pastor Daniel Nuhu, who is the accomplice, to him and they now went to the village, and from there, they started to kill the family.”
“He [Rev. Dr. David Nabegmado] came to me physically with a pistol. He didn’t get me,” Francis also recalled.
On January 3, 2019 the suspect, was taken to the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital for assessment.
