New Voter register: Boakye Gyan’s possible “civil war” comment senseless- Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has described as “senseless”, a statement made by former military officer Major Osahene Boakye Gyan (rtd) on a possible “civil war” should the Electoral Commission goes ahead with the new voters’ register compilation.

The lawmaker said the former coup plotter is ignorant of the electoral process of the country and the call for the compilation of a new voters register started during the era of former EC boss, Dr. Afari Djan, which was re-echoed by his predecessor, Miss Charlotte Osei, because it is bloated.

Osahene Boakye Gyan in an interview in Accra accused the EC of gradually leading the country into a civil war regarding the decision to compile a new voters’ register, a situation he thought is an attempt to rig the 2020 elections for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He wondered why the NPP is calling for a new register when the party won the 2016 elections with the biggest electoral margin, and warned that should the EC continue to toe the line of their paymasters (NPP), it will certainly spell doom for the country.

But speaking on Otec FM’s morning show ‘Nyasapo’, hosted by Captain Koda, on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, who is also the MP for Suame constituency in the Ashanti region, said the current register is bloated and does not fit for its purpose.

“Boakye Djan does not understand the electoral process of the land. How can he think of a civil war in the midst of compiling a new voters’ register. The new compilation was drummed by the Dr. Afari Djan and Charlotte Osei so it’s not only Jean Mensah’s EC who is advocating for a new one” he explained.

“It is senseless for Osahene Boakye Gyan to say that there will be a civil war if the EC goes ahead to compile a new register. The register is bloated and the country needs a credible one to ensure fairness in upcoming polls,” he chided Boakye Djan.

Parliament has already approved GH¢444,846,663 for the compilation of new voters register which it believes will be more credible and efficient than the existing one.
