Nigeria approves US request for extradition of embattled ‘Super Cop’

The Nigerian government has approved a United States extradition request for embattled former top cop, Abba Kyari, local media outlets have reported.

The development means he will be facing criminal charges in the US after federal authorities asked for his possible extradition months back.

The case in the United States is related to US$1 million fraud case and Kyari’s links with a famed fraudster, Ramon Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi.

The convicted fraudster admitted to American investigators that he had ‘contracted’ the embattled police chief to help his arrest a fellow fraudster at a point. Kyari has flatly denied the allegation.

Kyari’s headaches at home escalated in mid-February 2022 when the Nigeria Police Force effected his arrest.

He had been suspended at the time by the Inspector-General of Police from his role as head of the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team.

Kyari was arrested, along with four others, a few hours after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) declared him wanted over alleged drug links.

Kyari had become the face to Nigeria’s fight against kidnapping across the country and was celebrated as a ‘Super Cop,’ who was on his way to becoming the Police chief.
