The New Patriotic Party of Asawase constituency in the Ashanti Region yesterday, elected Alidu Seidu as its parliamentary candidate for the 2020 elections in a well-organized serene and peacefully unanimous voter acclamation as recognised by the party as a form of electing candidates by all party delegates in the constituency, under the official auspices of the National First Vice Chairman of the NPP, Madam Rita Asobayere.
The candidate elected, Honorable Alidu Seidu, doubles as the Municipal Chief Executive Officer for the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly was the NPP’s candidate in the last 2016 election. His re-election is reinforced by the party’s conviction owing to a detailed independent research results suggestive of the force in his ‘brand’ capable of breaking that ‘jinx’ and winning the Asawase parliamentary seat for the NPP.
Prior to yesterday’s elections, social media was awashed with news of a ‘supposed’ order of injunction granted by a high court to esstop the elections by a certain Manaf Ibrahim. Whereas the NPP and its assigns denies of being served with such supposed notice, an elder of the party in aboabo of the Asawase constituency, Alhaji Alhassan Illiasu, questioned the authenticity of that supposed injunction remarking that ‘ under Article 12 of NPP constitution, the letter and spirit of the constitution lays emphasis on who qualifies to be nominated as an aspirant.
The constitution states clearly and unambiguously that it is a member who qualifies to be nominated and not a suspended member as the status of Manaf Ibrahim is. For the avoidance of doubt article 12 says -No MEMBER shall be nominated or endorsed as the Party’s candidate in any parliamentary election, unless the Member has been selected in accordance with the provisions of this Article. Further, this supposed order was not duly served on the party or any of its assigns.”
“The tenor of article 12 defines inter alia who a member is as of ‘good character; and is of good standing.’ Manaf Ibrahim indeed acknowledges his legitimate suspension by writing his letter of apology appealing to the mercies of the party.
The NPP has not lift the legitimate indefinite suspension of Manaf Ibrahim as its member and being a suspended member of no good standing defeats the grounds of any application to stop an electoral process he is incompetent to engage in. This party is one that was founded on the tenets of rule of law and it’s instructive that we should pride ourselves as its gatekeeper.
Manaf Ibrahim’s status is hugely incompetent to start any court action against a process he is disabled to take part. His application for injunction is incompetent and the public is hereby entreated to disregard any aspects of it,’ the elder added
Another Kumasi based Lawyer stated that, yesterday’s election was a “legitimate exercise” as enshrined in the Public Elections Regulations of the Electoral Commission “Where at the expiration of time allowed for delivery of nomination papers and on the day before the elections only one candidate stands nominated , that candidate shall be declared elected”
Mr Alidu Seidu, was declared the NPP’S Parliamentary candidate by the returning officer of the electoral commission and the party’s representative. Another top NPP patron and member of council of elders in Ashanti Region who pleaded anonymity observed that “the entire party machinery in the constituency were there and as the party decided in Ashanti region by popular acclamation of the three orphan constituencies.
These separate elections were supervised by regional executives of the party. For the avoidance of doubt Asawase contituency was supervised by the regional financial secretary Mr Abagna , whilst that of Ejura was supervised by Lawyer Adom Appiah regional Assistant secretary whilst Sekyere Afram plains was supervised by Mr Francis Adomako regional organizer respectively at exactly 1pm simultaneously.”
It is said, that, Halidu brings into the party dynamism, diligence and an impressive record as MCE for Asokore Mampong capable of winning him the parliamentary election in 2020 for NPP in Asawase.
