Odawna man dies in Accra floods

One person has died in a heavy downpour in Accra that has left several parts of the capital flooded, a rescue team has confirmed.

The unidentified man is believed to have died by electrocution during the downpour at Odawna.

A joint team of soldiers at the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been patrolling affected areas to assess the extent of damage and humanitarian need.

At least 20 persons have been rescued from the floods after Tuesday dawn’s downpour that lasted hours.

The deceased was trying to salvage some items in his home during the flooding when he was electrocuted, a resident has explained.

At Achimota a bus was trapped in a storm drain. It was not carrying passengers.

At the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, an area prone to floods, several people have been displaced while those have made the streets their home needed to find new shelter during the downpour.

Bus stations at the interchange have been submerged in the floods. Affected persons were seen wading through the water to retrieve properties while others carried their friends and family through the waters to safety.
