A palpable sense of anticipation and simmering anger hangs in the air in Ofinso as residents mobilize in support of Yaw Amponsah, a local contractor embroiled in a years-long legal battle against the area’s sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
With the long-delayed case finally set to be heard, the community is demanding justice, alleging a blatant abuse of power and a deliberate attempt to ruin Amponsah’s livelihood.
The residents, many of whom have been following the case since its inception in 2019, claim that the former MCE and the MP, driven by personal greed and envy, conspired to deprive Amponsah of rightfully earned payments for contracts he had been awarded.
“They saw that Yaw Amponsah was doing well, and they didn’t want him to succeed,” claimed one resident, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal. “They said he was making too much money and that they weren’t going to allow it. They used their positions to take everything from him.” The residents lamented.
According to multiple accounts from community members, the MCE and MP allegedly lured Amponsah into accepting a contract, only to then refuse payment upon completion. Residents further allege that the officials then systematically seized all of Amponsah’s existing contracts, both those awarded by them and those secured through other avenues.
“It was done with impunity,” said another resident. “They wielded their power and authority without any regard for fairness or due process. This young man has suffered immensely because of their actions.”
The case, which has been languishing in the courts for several years, is now scheduled to be heard on Monday.
The residents express cautious optimism, placing their faith in the judiciary to deliver a just verdict.
“We seek nothing other than justice,” stated a spokesperson for the residents. “We have confidence in the judge and believe that the truth will finally come to light. Those who abused their power must be held accountable for their actions.”
