More than half of candidates who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in November/December failed mathematics, according to results released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
WAEC’s statement on the release of the 2023 second series WASSCE provisional results said 44.949% of candidates obtained grades A1 to C6 in mathematics.
Over 55% of candidates who sat for the examination failed the subject by scoring grades D7, E8 and F9.
“The total figure of candidates who sat mathematics is 26,553. A total of 11,260 candidates, which represents 44.949%, obtained grades A1 to C6.
“3,183 candidates, representing 12.70%, scored D7 while 3,349 candidates, representing 13.379%, had E8. 6,750 candidates, representing 26.94%, obtained F9,” said John K. Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, quoting from the statement.
WAEC has urged candidates to be wary of fraudsters promising to change their results for a fee, noting that only WAEC can authenticate and confirm examination results.
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Private is conducted by WAEC to provide an opportunity for candidates who did not enroll in a secondary school to nevertheless obtain the West African Senior School Certificate or for students who wish to upgrade the results they got from the main one.
