Pick an Ashanti running mate for your victory, Manhyia Chief’s advice John Mahama

At a recent commemorative durbar in Manhyia Palace, the Chiefs of Manhyia have extended heartfelt advice to former President John Mahama, urging him to consider selecting an Ashanti running mate for his upcoming political endeavors. The event, known as “Kuntunkuni,” was held to honor the memory of the Sagrenti War and featured a gathering of esteemed traditional rulers, dignitaries, and notable figures including His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, former President J. A Kufuor, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, diplomats, the British High Commissioner, and representatives from the British Museum.

During the durbar, amidst the somber reflections on the ravages of war and the historical injustices suffered by the Ashanti Kingdom, the Chiefs of Manhyia mobbed John Mahama and presented their appeal. They emphasized the significance of unity, representation, and inclusivity in Ghana’s political landscape, highlighting the importance of having a running mate who hails from the Ashanti region.

This move is seen as a response to the dynamics created by the presence of Dr. Bawumia, a northerner, who has made inroads into the NDC’s stronghold.

One compelling reason for this potential decision lies in the geographical considerations of the political landscape. Dr. Bawumia, hailing from the northern region, has demonstrated an ability to challenge the NDC in its traditional strongholds. This has prompted a strategic reassessment within the NDC, leading to the consideration of the Ashanti Region as a critical battleground.

The Ashanti Region is traditionally a stronghold of the NPP, and the NDC has historically faced challenges in garnering significant support in this area. However, by selecting a running mate from the Ashanti Region, John Mahama’s camp may seek to bridge this gap and strategically position themselves for a competitive edge.
