Police retrieve car snatched from NABCO boss

Police officers have been able to retrieve a brand-new Toyota pick-up vehicle which was snatched from its owner at gunpoint at Kanvili-Tuunayili, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region on Thursday night.

The vehicle was snatched from the Northern Regional boss of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), Mr Yahaya Abdul Rahman.

The incident brought the number of brand-new vehicles snatched from their owners in the Tamale metropolis alone this year to four.

In this latest incident, it was a collaboration between the police in the Northern Region and their counterparts in the Upper East Region that led to the retrieval of the vehicle.

The first incident of vehicle snatching this year happened about two months ago and it involved a pick-up belonging to the Savanna Regional Coordinating Council.

The second incident also involved a pick-up belonging to a pharmacist and the third one was a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Out of that number, two of the vehicles, the Toyota Prado, and this latest Toyota pick-up have been retrieved but that of the Savanna Regional Coordinating Council and the one belonging to the pharmacist are yet to be found.

Thursday’s incident

In the latest incident, the vehicle with registration number NR 9902 – 19 was the official vehicle of the Northern Regional Coordinator of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), Mr Yahaya Abdul Rahman.

The attackers are said to have abandoned it in the Upper East Region.

The suspected gunmen, who the police suspect to be part of a vehicle-snatching syndicate operating in the Tamale metropolis, took away two mobile phones belonging to the NABCO boss.

The Northern Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Kwabena Acheampong, told Graphic Online that the vehicle was abandoned and the keys were taken away.

Mr Yahaya Abdul Rahman, for his part, said that the robbers were all masked and held AK-47 riffles.

He said they broke into his home in Kanvili Tuunayili, a suburb of Tamale around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.

An eyewitness, Philip Abazoure, for his part, said he heard a shout from his neighbour calling for help and saw the vehicle being driven out of the house with three men inside.

“They were all holding AK-47 rifles and they drove the car out on top speed.”

He indicated that he called some radio stations to make announcements because he did not have the contact numbers of the police.
