Policeman interdicted for alleged rape of suspect’s wife

A policeman at Manso Datano in the Ashanti Region has been arrested and detained for allegedly raping the wife of a suspect in custody. He has also been interdicted by the police administration.

The policeman is said to have raped the victim several times at the Manso Datano Police Station in the Amansie South District.

According to the victim, the policeman said to be of a rank of Chief Inspector forcibly had sex with her while she sought bail for her detained husband.

The policeman reportedly offered accommodation to the victim who had arrived late at the station only for him to sneak into her sleeping place deep in the night to have sex with her.

The victim narrated her ordeal in a radio interview on Kumasi based Nhyira FM.

Police reaction

The Ashanti Regional Police command in a press statement explained that it has taken a serious view of the media report and has therefore commenced investigations into the matter and any subsequent update will be communicated to the general public.

The police press statement, signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Godwin Ahianyo said the Ashanti Regional Police Command will not shield officers who involve themselves in criminality as is the policy of the Inspector General of Police and the Police Administration.

“We are by this message advising the victim to report immediately to the Regional Police headquarters to assist in the investigation,” the statement said.

Victim’s narration

The victim narrating what happened in the Nhyira FM interview said she hails from northern Ghana together with the husband and they have five children.

She said the husband moved to the Manso area in Ashanti in search of a job and she received information through a telephone call that the husband had been involved in a criminal case and had been detained in police cells for three days, so she travelled to the area in an attempt to secure bail for him.

At night, the police officer offered her a room to sleep at the station and whilst there, the officer entered the room and raped her several times throughout the night, the victim said.

She said when she initially resisted, the officer told her that if she does not allow him to have sex with her, he was not going to release the husband and that he was going to send him to prison if the matter went to court and she was not going to see him again.

She said she had initially told the policeman that she was not going to sleep on the bed in the room when he first took her there and said she was going to be alright sitting on a bench outside.

But the policeman insisted and told her, he [policeman] was not going to sleep in the room either and that he was going to go home and sleep by his wife and so the suspect’s wife could have the room.

The victim said she decided to sit on a plastic chair which was in the room and whilst there, the officer sneaked back into the room and carried her from the chair unto the bed.

That was when he threatened to send the suspect to prison if the victim did not allow him to have sex with her.

According to the victim, the officer forcibly removed her cloth and warned her not to scream for other policemen who were outside to here.

She said she cried throughout the ordeal whilst the policeman had several rounds of sex with her throughout the night.
