President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has directed the Minister for the Interior and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately deploy additional security personnel to parts of the Bono East Region to combat a recent surge in highway and armed robberies.
The President made this announcement while addressing the people of the Bono East Region at the Kintampo College of Health and Well-Being during on Wednesday, as part of his ongoing thank-you tour across the country.
He acknowledged the growing concerns of residents over the increasing incidents of violent crime along major highways and within communities, which have left many in fear and disrupted economic activities in the affected areas. This follows a request by the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs and the Paramount Chief of the Basa Traditional Area, Nana Owusu, regarding the frequent highway robberies in the region, attributed to the poor road network.

“Development cannot thrive without security. We are aware of the challenges in the eastern corridor of Bono East, particularly around the Atebubu – Amantin area, Sene East and West and the Pru districts.
“Highway robbery and armed robbery has become rampant. In response, I have directed the Minister for Interior and the Inspector General of Police to deploy additional security personnel to those areas where highway robbery has become rampant.” He said.
In addition to the deployment, the President announced plans to equip the police with new patrol vehicles and modern communication tools to improve mobility and response times. He also assured the public of enhanced community policing efforts and a focus on intelligence gathering to disrupt criminal operations.
“We will also provide the police with patrol vehicles and communication equipment so that they can keep you safe. We are also going to strengthen community policing and intelligence gathering in order that we can reduce the incidence of armed robbery.” He stated
He continued, “Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the presence of justice and protection and we will not rest until every community in Bono East feels safe and secure.
