The TAP & HOP system was formally introduced in Kumasi, the Ashanti region, on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, with the endorsement of the Progressive Transport Owners Association Ghana (PROTOA).
Speaking at the app’s launch, Mr. Joseph Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of PROTOA, stated that the TAP & HOP system is a means of addressing the issue of passengers and transport operators in the nation’s inner-city transportation sector fighting for change.
He explained that the system is based on distance, so you only pay for the actual distance you’ve traveled. This eliminates unjustified fare increases and unneeded altercations between passengers and transportation providers.
He encouraged other unions and transport operators to sign up for the TAP & HOP system to contribute to the abolition of unwarranted fare increases and unwelcome altercations between passengers and transport operators.
To encourage the public to become more aware of the App, Chairman Mensah also made a plea to Mr. Prince Asamoah, CEO of TAP & HOP Pty Ltd, to intensify his efforts in developing the applications and to facilitate public awareness campaigns.
Chairman Mensah counseled the union leaders to keep educating their members to ensure accident-free before, during, and after the Christmas season, concurrent with the union’s final meeting of the year, which concluded on December 6, 2023.
Additionally, he urged the government to act decisively in 2024 to rein in the nation’s persistent price increases for foil.
On the other hand, the CEO of TAP & HOP Pty Ltd, Mr. Prince Asamoah thanked the union leaders for accepting the App and assured them that they would not disappoint the transport industry and would do well to provide them with the best.
According to him, the Tap & Hop App is a system that is used for digitizing fares for Trotro, Taxi, and Bus Operators (Owners) in Ghana by providing Transit Operators visibility into the revenue their vehicles generate.
“The Tap & Hop system will help transit Operators (Owners) by implementing an end-to-end AFC (Automated Fare Collection) solution used to digitize the payment of passenger fares for trips giving you visibility into revenues generated.” He said.
