Rapper Guru disqualified from University of Ghana SRC Presidential race

Ghanaian rapper Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known by his stage name Guru, has been disqualified from running for the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election.

A statement from the SRC clarified that Guru did not meet the necessary criteria to contest for the position.

According to a vetting report released on August 16, 2024, the SRC Vetting Committee reviewed the qualifications of several candidates, including three treasurer aspirants, three general secretary aspirants, and five presidential and vice-presidential aspirants. However, some of these candidates did not meet the required standards.

The report highlighted that two candidates, including Guru and Lawrence Edinam Egleh, were found to be non-residential students, which disqualifies them from participating in the election.

As per the University of Ghana SRC Constitution, candidates must meet certain residential requirements to be eligible for executive office.

“Upon a careful examination of the documents submitted, it was discovered that two candidates from the presidential and vice presidential aspirants, indicated their non-residential status, which they further confirmed during vetting the process,” the report stated.

Specifically, the constitution stipulates that a student must be qualified under their hall’s constitution and must reside in one of the university’s halls to hold a leadership position.

The Vetting Committee concluded that both Guru and Egleh did not satisfy these criteria, rendering them ineligible to run for the SRC presidency.

“The committee after a critical assessment of the qualification criteria, noticed that Maradona Adjei Yeboah and Lawrence Edinam Egleh do not meet the criteria stated in Article 30 (1) (a) of the UG-SRC Constitution and therefore do not qualify or are not eligible to contest for an Executive Officer position of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC)”.
