Ruto vs. Raila: Kenya election petition to be televised, carried on Facebook LIVE

The Kenya judiciary has announced that all is set for the start of high-stakes election petition hearing on Tuesday, August 30, 2022.

The processes set for the Milimani Law Courts in the capital Nairobi is to be televised LIVE on major TV stations and live on Facebook.

The petition is expected to be heard starting August 30 till Sunday, September 4 with final judgment expected on Monday, September 5.

“Owing to the Supreme Court hearing of Presidential Petition from tomorrow Tue 30th Aug to Sun 4th Sep Milimani Law Courts will be inaccessible to those without prior clearance. Watch the livestream on main TV stations and Kenya Judiciary Facebook page. Judgment is on Mon 5th Sep.” the judiciary posted in a tweet.

Outgoing deputy president, William Ruto was on August 15 declared president-elect of Kenya with 50.49% of the valid votes from the August 9 election, according to the International Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC.

He won his first run for the top job, beating former prime minister Raila Odinga who ran for the fifth time. Odinga got 48.5% of the vote.

If his win is affirmed, he will become the fifth president of the East African country. Odinga and other interested parties filed petitions seeking the courts to among others annul the election citing irregularities and or to order a rerun.
