As the much-anticipated iPhone 16 lineup is set to be unveiled at Apple’s upcoming event, it’s not just new hardware making headlines. iOS 18, which was previewed at Apple’s developer conference earlier this year, will also take centre stage.
But for those not planning to upgrade to a new iPhone this year, the question remains: Will your current device be able to support this latest operating system?
Each year, Apple phases out some older iPhone models from its iOS compatibility list, and this year is no exception. Last year, for instance, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X were left out of the iOS 17 update, missing out on the new features and improvements.
Which iPhones are compatible with iOS 18?
Fortunately, if your iPhone was compatible with iOS 17, it will also support iOS 18. This means you won’t need to purchase a new device to enjoy the latest software features. Here’s the list of iPhones that will be able to run iOS 18:
– iPhone SE (second generation or later)
– iPhone XR
– iPhone XS
– iPhone XS Max
– iPhone 11
– iPhone 11 Pro
– iPhone 11 Pro Max
– iPhone 12
– iPhone 12 mini
– iPhone 12 Pro
– iPhone 12 Pro Max
– iPhone 13
– iPhone 13 mini
– iPhone 13 Pro
– iPhone 13 Pro Max
– iPhone 14
– iPhone 14 Plus
– iPhone 14 Pro
– iPhone 14 Pro Max
– iPhone 15
– iPhone 15 Plus
– iPhone 15 Pro
– iPhone 15 Pro Max
In other words, if your iPhone is from the 2017 model year or earlier—such as the iPhone 8 or iPhone X—you won’t be able to upgrade to iOS 18. Your device will still function, but it will miss out on the latest features and improvements.
Another key feature of iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence, but not all iPhones will be able to use it. Currently, this feature is reserved for the high-end 2023 models, specifically the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s expected that the upcoming iPhone 16 models will also be compatible with Apple Intelligence, but the full details will be confirmed at Apple’s event on September 9.
